Keeping track of your Apple device – how do you prevent your iPhone from being stolen?

Apple products are typically some of the most sought devices to steal due to their high resale value and popularity. Whatever part of the country you are living in, theft does happen, however, it’s never been easier to protect your tech and ensure that even if the worst happens all your data is secure. Here is The iOutlet’s guide to keeping track of your devices, preventing theft and protecting yourself should you find yourself in a sticky situation.

Firstly, ensure that you have turned ‘Find My iPhone’ on

This should be turned on at all times as it isn’t a setting you can toggle remotely should you lose your device and want to use it. This feature works by uploading the GPS location of your phone so you can monitor it from a second device, such as an iMac or MacBook. You can also choose to share your location with friends and family which could help you locate your device if you lose it whilst out and about with your friends.

Ensure that your device has a strong password

The most common combinations for pins on iPhone are 1234, 1111 and 0000 – these are not secure and allow anyone to easily access your device with little effort. If you are using Face ID or Touch ID make sure you also have a good pin password to keep your phone as private as possible. This step ensures that even if your device is lost or stolen your data can be kept safe as no one else will be able to access it.

Don’t forget to back your device up regularly

So all of your precious photos, messages and other important information is stored securely and can be accessed from another device. Most people who lose or have their devices stolen are more upset about having lost their photos than they are the actual device itself.

Stay aware of your surroundings

It’s easier than ever to get sucked into the digital world within our phones but when using public transport or walking in public you should make sure you have at least some attention to your environment. Being aware can help you make decisions such as putting your device away if something seems off or not putting a device in your back pocket after finishing with it.

Remote Lock

If you do suddenly realise you’ve lost your device or suspect it has been stolen make sure you go online and remote lock it so that no files can be accessed. You should also contact your service provider and get your sim locked so that your data, calls or texts can’t be used.

Get insurance for your device!

You can pick up insurance for your device for as little as £4 a month. Having this insurance might not feel worthwhile most months, but if you do ever need it it’ll work out much more affordable than buying a brand new device.
